A Cradle for Multiple Cultures and Social Cohesion \ Nomad Office Architects Posted: 11 Mar 2012 08:00 AM PDT Heritage Revitalization in Hong Kong Heritage is a socio-cultural resource, which the Hong Kong citizen is drawing on to help define an identity, both connected to and distinct from mainland China. Heritage revitalization is primarily software driven and its operating model should reflect the social needs and benefit at time rather than only upkeep architecture which frozen in time. Social Inclusion of Ethnic Minority If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole range of human potentials, and weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place. In that regard, the operating model and the program should channel the positive energy and individual gift to form a symbiotic relationship and bring positive changes toward ethnic minority and local community. Local Identity of Hong Kong People The recent outrages against Chinese from the mainland reflect the increase of social tensions and identity issues since handover. The incidents also become a reflective glass of how we should see EM issues in our local context. If we are to embrace a harmonious society that appreciates cultural differences, we must at first discover and respect the values of our own culture and identity. In this project, a sustainable operating model should be well thought out to share vision with our community and generate positive social impact. Architectural quality can take place hereafter to complement the heritage site and the monument. + Project factsOffice: Nomad Office Architects + All images and drawings courtesy Nomad Office Architects |
BMW Welt \ Photography by Veronica Morales Angulo Posted: 10 Mar 2012 10:11 PM PST Veronica Morales shared with us her photography of BMW Welt by Coop Himmelb(l)au in Munich. The architect Prof Wolf D. Prix and his agency, COOP HIMMELB(L)AU, were able to visualize the expectations of BMW In the shape of gigantic cloud developed from a twisted Double Cone of steel and glass, and made accessible to visitors. The roof seems to hover high up since it was constructed to span a space of up to 80 metres in width. It is a giant, whose only visible support is provided by eleven elegant concrete pillars. The giant vault-like ceiling provides shelter for the BMW Welt facility while incorporating its 6300 square metre surface area into photovoltaic system. The architecture of the Double Cone adeptly expresses the strength and complexity of this absolutely unrivalled design. No single pane of glass in the facade is identical to another. Every steel frame in the construction is a unique work of art. This challenging vision has been realized with its own unique grandeur. + All images courtesy Veronica Morales+ More photography by Veronica Morales |
Widescreen House \ R Zero Studio Posted: 11 Mar 2012 07:55 AM PDT Located at San Gaspar Golf Club (Jiutepec de Morelos, Mexico), in an area of 1,600 square meters on top of a hill; Widescreen materializes in a one floor house to accommodate a versatile program. Today is a rest house, but tomorrow it will turn into a house where the client will enjoy his retirement. The house is resolved in two concrete volumes connected by one vertical element made of granite that communicates the private and public areas. The volumes were designed in 4:1 proportion, hence the name of the house, the use of apparent materials like concrete, black granite and crystal, achieve by making the house part of the mountain. + Project factsProject: Widescreen House |
