Workshop Steigereiland \ GROUP A Posted: 10 Mar 2012 07:40 AM PST In a primarily residential area at the edge of IJburg in Amsterdam, a location has been set aside for the development of commercial buildings. The ‘comb-shaped’ development is situated along the water of the IJmeer, on the west side of the Steigereiland. GROUP A has designed a building which currently houses two companies: one company (E2M) developing dynamic systems such as flight simulators, the other (Cruden) developing automotive simulators. The building comprises two factory spaces of 8 meter height on ground floor, with 4 meter height offices and research facilities on first and second floor. The building footprint fits the rectangular site, which is partly determined by the fixed urban envelope of 18 meters wide, by 60 meters long, and 16 meters high. The entrance to the development is located along the street, and accentuated by a powerful cut in the building-mass that harbours the access stairs to the first floor. This cut continues on the first floor of the south façade, providing a gallery for entering the premises. On the second floor the external gallery turns internal. The south façade which faces the adjacent neighbouring site has a rather closed appearance, also ensuring a reduction of heat gain. The façade facing the water has an open and transparent character, safeguarding views across the water towards the Amsterdam ringroad (A10). Simultaneously, this transparency ensures the user to be seen by traffic on the ring road. The façade has a skin made out of Corten steel sheet-material, with dimensions of 6 x 2 meter one of the largest sizes available. Corten steel, with its warm and reddish brown patina, polycarbonate and glass are the materials used in the façade, providing an industrial and sturdy look that suits the character of the companies. Recently, the Workshop Steigereiland project was nominated for the Golden A.A.P. 2012, a prestigious Amsterdam architectural award. Early May prizes will be awarded by Arcam. + Project factsProject: Workshop Steigereiland, IJburg, Amsterdam + All images and drawings courtesy GROUP A |
Daylighting Summer Course in Vicenza Posted: 10 Mar 2012 03:28 AM PST Daylighting Summer Course, Vicenza, Italy The University of Florida are holding a summer sustainable lighting design course, which we feel may be of interest to your association. We would therefore like to arrange with you the possibility of promoting the course through your website/blog/magazine. Ideal for those interested in the sustainable aspects of architecture and lighting design, this intensive educational experience is set against a backdrop of the Italian Veneto, where participants are involved in daylight matter and its design, simulation and integration. The course will be lead by Giovanni Traverso, founder of the Traverso-Vighy Architecture and Lighting studio, and sustainability director of PLDA.
Set in the town of Vicenza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the course includes guided tours to experience the play of light in architecture, from Renaissance masterpieces by Palladio and Scamozzi, to Carlo Scarpa’s works, and provides access to contemporary buildings by Piano, Fuksas, Ando, and to the recent Traverso-Vighy daylight experiments. The course philosophy stresses the necessity of analyzing daylight strategies as part of the basic concepts of an architecture project; using the circadian system in both natural and artificial lighting to positively influence our experience, and sharing a new consciousness of the importance of the influence of darkness on the built environment. The course is open to lighting designers and architects, both student and professional. For more information on the course, please visit the official website www.daylightthinking.com , or send them an email at information@daylightthinking.com. |
Posted: 10 Mar 2012 12:43 AM PST The site can be accessed from either side of the surrounding streets to allow for both a private and a public entrance. After moving along a curved wall that guides the visitor from the exterior of the plot into the center, one reaches the main entrance into the house. Upon entering through the main door frame, the space opens up to reveal the swimming pool and the public living areas of the house. The form of the residence is reminiscent of the movement patterns of a mop, from which flexible volumes are organized diagonally around a central axis. This axis twists upwards to generate spaces that are channeling the vision in different directions: the front side of the house, side gardens and angles of the back street.
The circulation surrounding the patio on the first floor contrives of a succession of living spaces, which not only communicate to one another, but also relate visually the interior of the patio to the exterior. The first floor overhangs to shade the rooms on the ground floor, and the patio is designed to define a break in between the volumes of the house, which subtly reveals a side garden. The residence was originally planned to house one family with two small children, however in the future it could be divided into two units. The structure of the house and the distribution of the circulation, as well as the positioning of the entrances and lift allows for guaranteed privacy between parents and children in the prospective future. + Project factsProject: Mop House Design Team: Joaquin Pérez-Goicoechea, Nasser B.
