Lagrangian potpourri vessel \ Kassen Posted: 08 Jan 2012 07:04 AM PST Kassen has designed the Lagrangian potpourri vessel. Generatively designed to cradle fragrant materials and to mimic the movements of the scent as they are released into the atmosphere. The vessel is hollow and transparent but structured finely to retain volume. The Lagrangian uses steel mesh to be porous to allow for the largest amount of airflow the vessel is the ultimate in releasing pleasing aromas into a space. The vessel ends definitively in two cedar obelisks designed to ground the light mesh structure. The Lagrangian vessel‘s delicate shape rides the line of gently holding material and releasing it, bringing to the user a distinctly modern scent experience. + Design: Kassen + All images courtesy Kassen |
Posted: 08 Jan 2012 06:23 AM PST 5AM is founded by 2 young Belgian designers OLIVIER CALUWIER & MATHIEU BELLENS, who are active in interior & furniture design. In every project they are searching for the perfect combination of function and design with creative touch. 5AM recently have created a creative booth at a fair nearby Kortrijk. They designed a little cocoon, created by approximately 1000 flower pots. In order to create a cosy atomosphere they putted some lightbulbs into the big pots that are fixed onto the ceiling. In the corner 3 pots are descending just above the sitting corner. + Designer: 5AM | OLIVIER CALUWIER & MATHIEU BELLENS |
Posted: 08 Jan 2012 01:03 AM PST Interior Designer Farah Al Humaidhi recently has completed the Skin Clinic in Kuwait. Large surfaces of colored stripped wood, waved ceiling and textured wooden walls are the hallmarks of this 500 square meter Dermatology Clinic. Daylight emanates from the perimeter to the interior revealing an inviting feel to the Clinic. Warm pleasing colors along with clean uninterrupted lines result in a combination of elegance and efficiency. The designer yearned to make a powerful artistic statement that defeats the cold, rigid stereotype of medical spaces. The Interior of the clinic can be classified into three parts which compose of the functional components of the plan. The design can be broken down into the Reception area comprising of the public waiting space, the specialized treatment rooms & Physicians consultation room. The design strategy was to have the Reception Area at one end of the peripheral & the Physicians consultation room including its private Operation room at the other end while accommodating the specialized treatments rooms in adjoining loop. Such a design paves way for an open corridor that is accessible by all rooms, where the space can be regulated by a supervisor. The drive was on creating a warm inviting Clinic while being futuristic & modern. One of the vital features of the design was lighting. Natural lighting was intensified in main reception while in certain area like the examination room the natural lighting was restricted, consequently indirect lighting was deployed by cove lights & directional lights to illuminate the patient below. The vital lighting theme followed was bright, natural lights in Public areas while bright but indirectly lit lights in the treatment rooms, however in the corridors it's an amalgamation of dim, indirect lights with natural lights subtly seeping in from the adjoining rooms. In order to give prominence to space the corridor is made up of staggered walls where the staggering is intensified by dramatically positioning the walls in a manner by fashioning an opening which is concealed by incorporating a translucent glass window Such a variation makes the space feel more generous & the passage of natural light allows the soft light to fall on the indistinct pass way. Staggering of the corridor walls not only brings an identity which alone does not inspire an awe effect but also enables in attaining the functional requirement of space. Another significant feature of staggering is the generation of privacy in the corridors & adjoining treatment rooms. Throughout the space, emphasis was on sterility & choices around color, furniture, finishes and texture. The apparent usage of colored stripped wood enhanced the energy level in the reception area while application of textured wooden walls along with the stripped wood in the examination room inspires the wellbeing in one's self. Stripped wood enveloped in hidden lights add to the surreal feel of the shaded corridor. The flooring strengthened the unity of the functional aspect along with ambience, the spreading of marbles in the reception denotes luxury & welcome while parquets in the public area signifies warmth & comfort & plain white flooring in the treatment room suggests hygiene & sterility. Another highlight of the project was the waved ceiling in the Facial room while rest of the ceiling was in tune with the project theme of straight lines. This distinguishing design was solely intended for facial room to transmit a feeling of serenity & relaxation to the patient below. All in all, every component identified & incorporated in making of the Clinic has served dual purpose augmenting the mood of the space while balancing the operational/functional element. Utmost care was taken throughout the design & construction phase to zealously uphold the warmth while not compromising on the character of the clinic. Everything suggests comfort, be it materials, system or the layout. A mesmerizing project where the individual features outshine its collective manifestation. + Project factsProject: SKIN CLINIC + All images courtesy Interior Art+ More clinic projects on +MOOD |
Posted: 08 Jan 2012 12:22 AM PST Paris-based architectural firm Emmanuel COMBAREL Dominique MARREC Architects (ECDM) has desinged the Campus EDF – Saclay. Rural Urbanism The completion of a building in the planning project of Saclay Paris is a unique opportunity to be one of the markers of the future center of excellence established on the plateau. The uniqueness of the site, and it's present and future characteristics, make it an interesting emerging area. The landscape was the starting point of a project created with the idea of being surrounded by nature. The lack of construction dominates; the site is large, distended. The use of territory is essential here: to spread out would be to trivialize the landscape. Our first priority is to give value to the abundance of space. We also wanted to display the economy with which our building uses the territory, by proposing a compact architecture, a mass which seeks to use with moderation an area of great value. Here, wealth is space. We have therefore designed a project aware of its footprint, just as conscious of its siting as if it were in a rare and fragile environment. It is the landscape that unifies and saturates the architecture. We are dealing with a rural urbanity, with paradoxical planning that provides both the advantages of the city and the country in the same place. The resulting project is dense and compact, a volume which unifies a diversity of programs. The building is treated as a block framed by blocks of green, a building perfectly inscribed in a geometric landscape. The organization of our siting helps create structure within the landscape, a cluster where buildings are not solitary objects, but elements of a whole. Our project fits within the logic of blocks, a constructed block responding to the planted blocks, in a project where vegetation constitutes mass, along with what is built. The nature of the project is not a compromise, but a contrast. There is consequently an un-fragmented volume organized in layers, developing a system of simple alignments which give unity and clarity to each program. The built volumes respond to vegetal masses in and around the project, create alignments within an urban landscape offering a new balance between mineral and vegetable. Destination The site is a destination, a place that possesses and defines its own temporality. The question of time also organizes the architectural proposition. The idea of countenance, of interlude, of a place where we spend a few days or weeks, compels one to shape a moment that remains as a singular experience, not trivial. As a destination, the campus offers distance from the everyday in order to better focus on the courses. The campus is remote from the frame of work, family and routine, and creates a lifestyle for each visitor to appropriate. There is a profound, dense internality which we wanted to create; it is an architecture which proposes a community within the culture of the enterprise. Our proposal defines a collective lifestyle which remains unique from everyday life. The inspiration of time, of a series of episodes which cross in time and space define the campus as a vessel, a place for adventure. More than luxury, it is the realization of shared values that creates an extraordinary environment. It is therefore a building that contains a multiplicity of different living spaces, where each of these programs is considered as an individual moment within the day of a visitor, where the intimate and collective superpose and intermingle without altercation. This is again not to trivialize anything, not the effort of training, or the moments of exchange and interaction, or the time for reflection and meditation. It is a place of intense collective life where needs for isolation and personal space are also met. + All images courtesy ECDM |
