Multimodal Interchange of Saint-Nazaire \ Tetrarc architects

Posted: 21 Jun 2013 09:11 AM PDT

Designed by Tetrarc architects, Saint Nazaire railway station is the focal point of a public transport network for a sprawling town that is destined for further growth. The creation of a high-frequency bus route lead to the reworking of the roadways and parking areas for buses and coaches around the station as well as the development of the square in front of the station.

+ Project description from Tetrarc architects

Saint Nazaire railway station is the focal point of a public transport network for a sprawling town that is destined for further growth. The creation of a high-frequency bus route lead to the reworking of the roadways and parking areas for buses and coaches around the station as well as the development of the square in front of the station.

Discussions between the architects, the town authorities and the Carène development council led to changes from the initial design:

  • the bus and coach parking areas are to be located on the existing plaza between the station and the post-war buildings opposite. Using this site relieves congestion for buses and coaches;
  • a cheaper, longer-lasting coating is to replace the granite planned for the public transport operating area.

The budget that this has freed up means that two long parallel canopies can be built to protect public transport users. Standing out in the town thanks to their broad, flowing and colourful protective covers, they provide the additional comfort of enclosed glazed shelters which protects against the often violent winds of the Atlantic coast.

Concrete slabs are used to cover the plaza, creating a carpet on which are spread a bike rack in the shape of an engine shed, benches, information screens and lamp posts whose shape directs the eye towards the station entrance.

Very close by, the post-war period concrete bridge over the railway lines has been replaced by a metal one. A segregated bus lane and two lanes for cars take up the central roadway. To the sides, two pavements each provide a footpath and a cycle path. The desire to protect pedestrians and cyclists from bad weather, along with the requirement to build railings above the railway lines, produced the distinctive shapes that emphasise engineering in the town by evoking the silhouettes of ocean liners under construction which are visible above the town’s skyline. The station is at a symbolic crossroads between the port town and the railways, the town centre and the outlying commercial districts, the post-war town and its urban growth at Circé-Trignac.

HOME and STUDIO of architect Massimo Iosa Ghini

Posted: 21 Jun 2013 08:26 AM PDT

The HOME and STUDIO of architect Massimo Iosa Ghini, is an example of qualitative renovation of a ’30s building located in a noble area of Bologna. It is an idea of eco-friendly and experimental project, which contains several innovations, along with tailor-made and archived products in a livable environment. The goal of the design is “search in your own home sustainability, aesthetics, cost."

The house of a designer, is always an instrument of representation which also returns a minimum of experimentation. And mixing the two areas with the daily practice remains an exciting path.

+ Architect’s statement from Massimo Iosa Ghini

The HOME and STUDIO designed by Massimo Iosa Ghini represents a qualitative renovation that adds dynamism to the original structural entity – a building of 600 sqm located in a noble area of Bologna city – dating to the rationalist period of the last century, together with the component of preservation.

It is a project for a new home-studio-workshop and showroom of Massimo Iosa Ghini which contains several significant and original elements and recreates a livable environment, an innovative way of living: a perfect union between architecture, interior design, decor, attention to detail.

Recovery, minimization of consumptions, project of a special custom-made elements, aesthetics and high-quality materials, comfort are the keywords of the recent project.

As architect Massimo Iosa Ghini says, the goal was to “search in your own home sustainability, aesthetics, cost.”

“The house of a designer – continues Iosa Ghini – is always an instrument of representation which also returns a minimum of experimentation. And mixing the two areas with the daily practice remains an exciting path. ”

The leading concept was to create a real example of sustainable project, for a qualitative renovation that takes into account the costs of the building, with a positive relationship between investment costs, real consumptions and qualification, considering the aesthetic result.

The architectural project was to redefine the southern facade, interpreted as the major collector of solar energy. The pre-existing wall was demolished for a facade made of plant screens for summer protection, while during winter it acts as a collector of solar energy through a direct absorption, which is mixed throughout the year with the photovoltaic panel.

Several elements of the house including the fitness area, the living room and the studio / show room of Massimo Iosa Ghini have become the occasion to create taylor made products that underline the Made in Italy style, some of which are already in production.
