The Petal Velomobile is the beginning of the new iconic brand of affordable, ultra-lightweight and aerodynamic vehicles developed around a diverse amount of user preferences and personality types, to usher in a new era of human powered mobility. We have focused on solving our problems with the same toolset for far too long, while electric cars may solve our issues associated with energetic consumption and pollution; human powered electric hybrid vehicles provide a solution with a miniscule carbon footprint and unrivalled transit potential that can dramatically reduce healthcare costs associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

As any vehicle serves as a vessel for your personality and self expression, the Petal Velomobile is infinitely customizable to suit your mood and personality. The gore-tex and spandex blend membrane easily pops on and off the frame. Because the fairing elements are nonexclusive and variable in vapour resistance, the enclosure can be modified to provide comfort for almost any weather condition. Similar to an iphone case or pair of shoes, the inter-changeability of this fairing allows it to truly become a fashion accessory. Extremely personalize-able, from baby carriers and storage compartments to custom skins and carbon fiber upgrades, the product extends its reach to a diverse clientele.

Critical to safety, led headlamps combined with oled light panels maintain a strong visible presence night and day. The oled light panels function as directional indicators and customizable kinetic light effects. These highly visible elements highlight the creased knee and shoulder lines of the vehicle; expressive of the rider inside. With a leaning suspension, slippery aerodynamic form, and electric acceleration and hill assist package, the Petal Velomobile extends the possibilities of human powered transit.

The Petal Velomobile is flexible to a varied amount of users, engaging both urban mobility and performance as critical design parameters. Because the most deluxe model is a fraction of the cost of an automobile, this form of mobility becomes accessible to a completely new demographic. Ultimately the goal of this design is to liberate people beyond the current modes of transit, while maintaining the ownership values of car culture, while emulating the efficiency of mass transit.

As an unlicensed transit architect, every day bicycle and rowing commuter, and regenerative design advocate, my goal with this project is to utilize existing technology to push the boundaries of our sustainable transit potential. With the constraints of population growth and scarcity of energy resources, we must ultimately elevate the performance of human powered transit to the point where it out competes other modes of transit. In my forthcoming book this vehicle is one element in a new infrastructure typology that utilizes existing right-of-way’s to expand our transportation potential as a society.

100 Mile House by JPP Architekci / Luk Studio

JPP Architekci / Luk Studio have recently designed 100 mile house.

The idea

In terms of form and functionality the final project decision was due to the following factors: the size of a typical plot on the outskirts of Vancouver, the urban context and the functionality program for a family of four. The main idea behind it was to place the house on the plot in a way that allows the best use of its biologically active site, in line with the motto: “100% of the site – 100% of the woodlands.”

The form and function

The auxiliary functions such as parking places were stowed underneath the building. It gives unlimited possibilities of arranging the space around the house. On the ground floor there is an entrance zone, three bedrooms (each with a private exit to the garden), a large bathroom and a utility room. “The daily zone” on the first floor has been designed as an open space, which gives the possibility of enlarging it with a green roof terrace.

The form of the building is dictated by several functional considerations and the idea of linking the interior with the neighbourhood. Combining different levels of the house, the green roofs and a garden with ramps gives the future owners the possibilitie to use the plot in the best way.

The materials and ecology

The project assumption is to create a self-sufficient “green island”

surrounded by an ordinary neighbourhood. Ecological solutions allow using renewable energy sources (sun, water, earth, air). The system of prefabricated structural SIP panels, LED lighting, a tank for rainwater, drainwater heat recovery system, ventilation system with heat recovery, photovoltaic panels and heat pumps are the others technologies used in this house. The materials used in the project are wood, concrete, glass and stone. The facades of the building are finished with a Canadian spruce, architectural concrete and wood blinds.

A team of 3XN architects, Aarhus Architects, Nickl & Partner Architechten, Grontmij and Kirstine Jensen Studio has won the prestigious competition for the expansion of Copenhagen's main hospital, Rigshospitalet, which is expected to be completed in early 2017.

The winning proposal for the 76,000 m2 extension of Copenhagen's most centrally located hospital ensures efficient and timesaving logistics, while daylight, green spaces and views of the neighboring park contribute to the wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors.

The building's shape is characterized by a series of folded v-structures together with a transversal fast track. This unique structure receives praise from the competition's jury committee:

The benefits for the hospital’s core services are immense. The structure will have a positive impact on the everyday of the staff in the wards, it will give the service personnel the opportunity to effectively move around in the building, and not least, it will give the hospital the opportunity to offer patients more calm and clarity ( ..)

Partner in Aarhus architects, Mette Dan-Weibel, elaborates:

The positive patient environment will support the treatment and contribute to shorter hospitalization. Moreover, the proximity of the different functions creates short distances for staff and thus optimizes the daily operations .

The folded v-structure provides space for five atriums that will serve both as comfortable lounge areas and points of orientation that makes way finding easy and logical. Finally, the shape of the building ensures an interior which is characterized by lots of daylight and views of the park and the city.

The integration of sustainable building solutions, gardens and green walls both inside and outside has been a key focus throughout the design process:

The idea is that the integration of a green environment both inside and outside will contribute to an ambience that has a healing effect on patients and will also create a positive physical environment for staff and visitors. At the same time, these features will minimize negative environmental impacts.

3XN‘s partner and creative director, Kim Herforth Nielsen

To adapt to the surrounding urban space the building is scaled down from the northwest to the southeast. This means that the building has nine floors up against the existing hospital complex and just four floors towards the street. In this way, the building height matches the classic multi-storey houses on the other side of the street. The facade of glass and light natural stone is angled so that it is partially self shading and visually adapts to the area’s existing building facades.

Besides the construction of the hospital extension the project includes the development of the area’s master plan and the construction of a new patient hotel and multi-storey car park.
