Embedded in a country house outside the openness draws airy spaces which are expressed in broad, bright and clear yet a “retreat” and an object of longing.

Minimalism calculated visual cleanliness, are expressed in the walls free of decoration, still dotted with patches of color that add interest to the space.

YNH | yHa architects

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 06:21 AM PST

Japanese architectural firm yHa architects has recently completed the YNH house located in Tokyo, Japan.

The facade has “autonomously” opening system grid-like continuous pattern and its size are “heteronomously” translated in relation to views or surrounding environment or interior function.

yujin HIRASE, founder of yHa architects

+ Project description by yHa architects

I thought mainly how to connect with time axis of surrounding history of the site that a military commander made a “fort” during the Age of Civil Wars (15-16th century) . The site of north/west is road and south/east is the neighboring house, so the major theme is the way of taking a sunlight.

YNH yHa plusMOOD 3 595x418 YNH | yHa architects

I designed 3-floor void as “light-tube” by analogy of “fort” like Scotish Tower-House. The room on each floor are arranged around “light-tube” like a square in the house and the inner-opening facing the void make a role as linking by one’s eyes between the room.

By putting opening continuously in a height of eye-level and designing the details of opening frame close to frame-less, our eyes go through inside and outside although narrow space so we don’t feel the oppression. The room has same specifications that is exchangeable for other functions. I proposed the “prototype” architecture by grasping the delicate differences of surrounding environment.

In considering the context with the surrounding environment, in Japan I think the ground is texture or color of the structures for public use (e.g. road) these are remaining almost same in the future more than the form or place of opening of surrounding architecture. I designed this architecture like “fort” in the city continuously from the texture or color of road in front of this site.

Dojima River Forum CAFE | Terminal01

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 08:25 PM PST

Terminal01 has designed the Dojima River Forum CAFE located in Osaka Japan.

+ Design statemetn by Terminal01

The cafe is situated on the second floor of the recently opened Dojima River Forum in Osaka Japan. Osaka city used to be called a water-capital. Rivers and canals once crisscrossed the city.

There is a big solid wooden staircase as an element, which connects ground level and second level, the café. Facade of the building is glass curtain wall, so that we tried to design the staircase symbolic to emphasize as an entrance of the Café.

Material of the ceiling is glossy vinyl sheet. Because the cafe is located on the second floor of the building, people, walking on the ground level, can naturally catch the ceiling of the cafe.

The glossy ceiling reflects the surroundings and scenes of the inside space. The reflection is as if the reflection of the river. The reflection of inside and outside makes people consider the continuity of the inside space and outside space.

House in Kitasaya | Terminal01

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 02:19 AM PST

Japanese studio Terminal01 has completed a house in Kitasaya located in Ehime Prefecture, Japan.

“void” was placed at the center of the house, which is the main space of the house. This space is open up to the sky…family can feel the cycle of the seasons, weather, light, and so on, through this void space, even though there are few window on the facade.

+ Architect’s statement by Terminal01

When the project developed, the client requested a house which does not have too much opening to outside. They wants their own private space, but they get uncomfortable without feeling each other’s presence.

So that, one opening  “void” was placed at the center of the house, which is the main space of the house. This space is open up to the sky, so it is completely outside and does not have specific function.
However, this void brings the light to all the space in the house and parents who lives first floor can feel the life of their sons who are in second floor.

We would like to design the house which family can feel the cycle of the seasons, weather, light, and so on, through this void space, even though there are few window on the facade.
