Posted: 17 Jun 2012 05:11 AM PDT Located in the heart of Brooklyn, the Wythe Hotel is an 8-story hotel on the Williamsburg waterfront. Built in 1901, this former cooperage has been meticulously converted into a 72-room hotel offering service and amenities yet to be seen in the borough, while the building's industrial character – including its concave corner entrance, original pine beams, masonry, arched windows and cast-iron columns – has been beautifully preserved. Like its surrounding neighborhood, the Wythe Hotel melds historic with modern, creating something entirely unique and authentic. Atop the original 5-story structure sits a new 3-story glass and aluminum addition that references the hotel's existing factory windows while dramatically pulling the building into the present. Throughout the hotel, 72 guest rooms feature 13' high original timber ceilings, oversized windows, radiant heat concrete floors, seasonally sourced mini-bar offerings, custom amenities and works by local artists. Many rooms boast floor-to-ceiling views of the Manhattan skyline and East River. Renowned Brooklyn restaurateur Andrew Tarlow, of Marlow & Sons, Diner, and Roman's, manages the hotel's expansive food and beverage program. Venues include Reynards – a ground floor restaurant and bar with a wood-fired oven and grill, courtyard seating, and a daily menu featuring market-driven American fare and seasonal cocktails, and Ides – a 6th floor bar and terrace with stunning Manhattan and Brooklyn views. There are various event spaces as well, including a main event hall, a private dining room, large guest lofts and 60-seat screening room and bar. Wythe Hotel is located in Brooklyn's most dynamic neighborhood, with Williamsburg's best galleries, boutiques, bars, restaurants and concert halls within walking distance. It is one subway stop from Manhattan, and minutes from the central hub of Union Square. + Project factsABOUT

Linea Piu Boutique \ Kois Associated Architects Posted: 17 Jun 2012 02:16 AM PDT The project is the creation of Linea Piu* Boutique in Mykonos island. Mykonos is part of the Cyclades islands complex renowned for its elegance and exuberant lifestyle. The cube-shaped buildings and whitewashed exterior facades, the meandering roads that twist through the main city of Chora, the beautiful churches and the windmills compose an imagery that is characteristic and emblematic of Greece and the Mediterranean beauty. Allusion is the concept of the new boutique in Mykonos Island, allusion to the Grecian myth and tradition that saturates the Aegean. The structure and all the original architectonic elements were preserved and within this clean historic shell the new fittings and furniture were surgically fitted into place. The selection of objects reflects various aspects of the island, and connects us to its history. The custom made iron furniture and fittings allude to beautiful ancient findings of the Mykonos Museum and their texturing is reminiscent of the texturing found on Alberto Giacometti sculptures. The installation in the dress display room alludes to the diffused mellow light that the Mykonian shutters introduce to an interior space. The polyhedral lamps make us think the Mykonos old lighthouse and the tranquil strolls by the sea. The elegant leather stools travel us to the traditional Mykonian meeting places like the square and the yard. The whole synthesis is orchestrated in a way that wakes up memory and brings to mind images from the life of the island. It is routed to the place in a contextual manner but not a scenographic one. Our goal was to synthesize a space the combines the brand's aesthetic and design clarity, quality and finesse and is nor isolated nor detached from its location and spirit of the place. *Linea Piu is exclusive luxury retailer in Greece for some of world’s top fashion houses such as Chanel, Tom Ford, John Galliano,Blumarine. + Project factsPRINCIPAL ARCHITECT: KOIS STELIOS + All images courtesy Kois Associated Architects |
Apartment in Turku \ Maurizio Giovannoni Posted: 17 Jun 2012 01:45 AM PDT Roman designer Maurizio Giovannoni recently has completed the interior design for an apartment unit in Turku, Finland. The apartment is a little penthouse (about 65 mq.) in Turku, Southern Finland. Before renovation, too many walls and doors blocked the spaces and the passage of light, and the most beautiful view of the historical sites of Turku was on the bedroom side. My principal goal in this project was letting the light flow in and creating a relaxing living room where my customer could do his creative work. The partial demolition of walls was a natural consequence, along with reversing the location of the bedroom and living room. After fixing this, we decided on the overall "concept" together with my customer, organizing all the details that colored the white spaces. That happened during my customer's visit to Rome (due to my impossibility to travel in that period), and via 4oo e-mails between Turku and Rome. The result is what I now consider my style: a blend of cultures. There is nothing that stimulates me more than to study different countries and make some cultural themes recognizable but never intrusive in the project. In this case, the floor is covered with parquet of white ash, the shelves are birch and the kitchen table is also birch but colored with heat. Wood is a omnipresent element in this flat as it constantly is for Finnish people, but the real attention is catalyzed by the nature theme pictured on wall paper, carrying colours and contrasts and a typical Mediterranean "courage". The furniture itself is a mix of the 2 cultures and of past & present: the grandmother's armchair is a piece of Finnish vintage from the sixties as is the red floor lamp. The arc framing the wall paper is the famous Twiggy by Foscarini and the suspended lamps are Italian as well:Olimpia by Ideal Lux. Everything fits together in perfect harmony! + DesignerArchitetto Maurizio Giovannoni + All images and drawings courtesy Maurizio Giovannoni |
