Maison Carlos Ortega | ROW Studio Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:24 AM PDT Maison Carlos Ortega, is an ultra low cost apartment refurbishment designed by ROW Studio for fashion designer Carlos Ortega. With an extremely low budget of $6000 dollars the refurbishment for the apartment of fashion designer Carlos Ortega was done in a period of just 6 weeks and with the client already occupying the site. The intervention aimed to create a very clear division between public and private areas. The public areas serve both as the living room of the apartment and as a showroom for the client’s brand. The private areas on the other hand needed special emphasis on the storage and grooming areas where the client could store his clothing collection along with his own creations and that can be used at the same time as a dressing room for his clients. These areas are separated by a twisting wall of panels that span from the kitchen on to the bedroom on a diagonal axis. A twist in the base of this wall enlarges the available floor area in the bedroom generating sufficient space for a desk and at the same time maintaining the spatial sensation on the outside. A similar twisted wall crosses the opposite wall adding a large shelving space for the client's book collection and to exhibit some of his clothes. The whole refurbishment was done with OSB panels to maximize the budget with some details tinted in several different colors in the living room and on shades of gray for the single bedroom. These tinted stripes follow different color sequences going from yellow to white when viewed from the entrance towards the windows, yellow to red from the window towards the kitchen and from black to white inside the bedroom. + Project credits / dataProject: Maison Carlos Ortega + About ROW StudioROW Studio is an architecture and design firm founded by Álvaro Hernández Felix and Alfonso Maldonado Ochoa in 2005. Its name derives from the term used in economy to refer to global phenomena (ROW: Rest of the World), as a critical standpoint against the clichés of Mexican architecture and the need to generate an international discourse both in processes and proposals departing from a multidisciplinary approach. At the same time addresses the need of expanding the field study and influence from architecture to other disciplines such as sociology, psychology, economy, marketing, etc. + All images and drawings courtesy ROW Studio | Photo by Jorge Silva |
The ‘On Demand Experience’ | Benjamin Feenstra + Jelmer Frank Wijnia Posted: 14 Mar 2011 03:04 AM PDT Every year, the internationally renowned eVolo Skyscraper Competition takes place. The award seeks to discover young talent, whose ideas will change the way we understand architecture and its relationship with the natural and built environments. This year, Benjamin Feenstra and Jelmer Frank Wijnia, two young Dutch designers, won an honorable mention. Their entry; The 'On Demand Experience'. The jury selected 3 winners and 32 honorable mentions out of a record number of 715 entries, from a staggering 95 countries. The two designers, who recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree, are the second Dutch team in the history of the prestigious competition to receive such an honor. To achieve this result, Benjamin and Jelmer Frank started brainstorming in September 2010. Starting point of their design are innovations like the smartphone, laptop or tablet computer and social media like Facebook and Twitter. Overall, the way people communicate, work and move has changed. But with this rapidly changing lifestyle and ever demanding environment, it is surprising to find that houses stayed pretty much the same. They believe in order to get the most out of current technological developments, the direct living environment should change too. WIth this idea in mind the, soon to be, architects started to design the 'On Demand Experience'. The concept behind the 'On Demand Experience' is simple. Instead of going to different places, the facilities come to you. Simply request the desired space with your computer and the request will be processed by the warehouse connected to your building. Your space will arrive as an equipped 'box' that plugs into your apartment. Several boxes can dock in a single apartment at the same time and everything is available on demand. So whether the desire is to play golf, work out or have a lunch meeting, just let the warehouse know! The designers call this the the ultimate mixed-use building where apartments blend with different functions and services. Benjamin and Jelmer Frank presented this concept using a comic book. Three characters, Jeff, Truman and Sylvia, guide the reader through The On Demand Experience. After receiving a special mention in such a high profile architecture competition, it would make sense for the two Dutch to become architects. Surprisingly, they do not know yet. Although they already work together as architecture students for seven years, they use the motto "doubt is good", to take figure out what they want. This year is, as they call it, "a year to fulfill dreams". Benjamin and Jelmer Frank try to chase their, not always architecture related, dreams in order to figure out wether to become architects or not. For example, they are now in pre-production for a DJ's video clip which will be taped in Dubai. Also, the two best friends are designing a mega church in the Netherlands. They both agree that the honorable mention of the eVolo competition is like a dream which they are living. Surely they don't want to wake up yet. + All images and drawings courtesy Benjamin Feenstra + Jelmer Frank Wijnia |
Diamond Product Pavilion – Architect Fair 2011 | Apostrophy’s Posted: 13 Mar 2011 11:24 PM PDT In Bangkok Architect fair 2011, another Apostrophy's favorable circumstances from our companion, Diamond Building Products Public Company, their product lines are ceramic, laminate, construction hardware and construction service in Thailand. Apostrophy's role play for this project is "artist" for concept "Diamond Art – Diamond Lounge" 2011. Imagine you walking into an aesthetic place, where you can leisurely sit and sip some beverages ,surrounded by art pieces in gallery made from durably construction hardware products. Furthermore, these inspire the visitors to create their own master pieces, home. Apostrophy's categorized Diamond Tile 2011 area for 3 main functions :
This year, the primary reason of using Diamond Lounge space is to apply "HOW TO" of the "Purlin", hardware for roofing, the highlight of their product launching this year. Apostrophy's transform its functional into the element of booth's construction by "joint" the bent–angle of the purlin together. To describe the main structure, wall, huge lamp ceiling, it's like Apostrophy's sketch the structure with clean white matt Purlin, appeared-shadow with the rhythmic of space & line of the structure, colour the pavilion with lighting, which Apostrophy's layered-hang LED PAR, fluorescent light box to create Lounge environment sense with their various programming pattern of lighting scene design, shown as dimension of Diamond Reflection. Considering for the visitor circulation and space, the reception, product display and bar, we use these functions profitably by linking all activities and product benefits together in every part of the construction. By blurring marketing techniques, in stead of "Direct-sale marketing and clients", Apostrophy's convert into "Curators of the house hardware and the aspirant artists". The products will be more easily to approach, to understand and to exchange the opinion. More obvious, you can see various types of ceramics beautified on the pole, can feel the texture of laminate floor while you are walking around and read the "art caption", details of products, and have some fine discussions. In conclusion, the Open plan design for continual circulation, intimate activities, product applied for main construction, decoration and lighting scene design, the reaction from all movements were expected not only to support product selling or be the highlight of the Diamond Tile Pavilion but also to be the landmark of sharing and sparkling the inspiration which is comparable to the Chandelier of Architect fair 2011. + Project credits / dataProject: Diamond Product Pavilion – Architect Fair 2011 + All images and drawings courtesy Apostrophy's |
