Inside-out Art Center | Atelier 11 Posted: 23 Jan 2011 07:02 AM PST In Beijing, China-based architectural studio Atelier 11 has successfully converted the 30 years old factory building into the contemporary Inside-out Art Center.
+ Project description by Atelier 11As a renovation project, the Inside-out Art Center is part of a cultural industrial zone located in the west part of Beijing. With a total scale of 211,530 sqm, the zone includes studios for artists, lofts, office complex, and exhibition centers. The Art Center is the only construction built out of an existing structure in this real estate project. The original building of the Art Center was the factory site of a machinery company for about 30 years. With the developer's expectation to keep and reuse this old structure and create both sale and culture-oriented facilities, the renovation started from the west side of the building and converted that space into a sale office (later used as a service office after the sale was completed). The design intention during this step was to keep the original building envelope as much as possible and to use steel frame in the interior as structural elements. This allows the architects to add a box-shaped volume inside the existing building and create new rooms for sale service by extending the space outside the existing windows, as an experiment on new approach for renovation. In the second stage of the renovation starting one year after the renovation of the sale office, a multi-functional art center was built on the east part of the building. The Art Center and sale office are connected by an external passage in the shape of a zigzag tube. It is not only a functional feature for circulation, but also creates a twisted and narrow space that makes the eventual access to the grand exhibition hall an interesting experience for the visitors, with a dramatic contrast of space scale. A simplistic aesthetic was adopted for the interiors of the Art Center with the intention to keep some characteristics of the previous industrial building, as a reflection to the history of the site. The original windows, walls, and floors are kept with modest renovation. The combination of daylights through the high side-windows and artificial lightings on steel-framed tracks fulfills the lighting requirement for exhibitions. As a supplement to the external passage, wide steps are also built to internally connect the spaces of the exhibition hall and the second floor of the sale office. This project exemplifies that with creative renovation on historical buildings and not necessarily with big budget, we would have the opportunity to preserve the history of the city and at the same time develop new potentials out of any old functions, no matter whether the buildings were famous in history or just ordinary constructions. + Project credits / dataProject: Inside-out Art Center + All images and drawings courtesy Atelier 11 | Photo by Zhang Guangyuan |
The Ring Stadium | OFIS Arhitekti + Multiplan Arhitekti Posted: 23 Jan 2011 06:55 AM PST OFIS Arhitekti, in collaboration with Multiplan Arhitekti has designed the extension of the football stadium in Maribor, Slovenia. + Project description by OFIS ArhitektiThe plot that was used as a multi-functional sport field and is located in the centre of the city. In the sixties a small tribune was built along one side of the field that was covered with a huge concrete arched roof. The brief was to convert the field into a football stadium and to extend the existing building with covered tribunes (12.500 spectators, VIP and press facilities) and additional public programs such as 4 big gymnasiums, fitness-club with swimming pools, shops and restaurants. The project proposed a ring of tribunes weaving above the enclosed base with public programs. The lowest and the highest point of the tribunes are defined by the quality of the view of the spectator. In the corners of the field, where the views are restricted, the entrances to the tribunes are displaced. The ring is pulled down here to the level of the entry plateau. Then it rises gently to reach the highest points in the middle of the field. There the maximum number of the seats is provided, offering the best views to the field. The corridor of the ring has a double skin and is providing rooms for VIP, Press and refreshments. In the base, sport halls and shops are displaced. The roof of the base forms an entry plateau to the tribunes and also offers views to the smaller sport field at the side of the stadium. Clearly, what puts the design of the Stadium in Maribor on the map of world stadiums is its conceptual precision. The orchestration of shapes along with the existing concrete shell, its apparent simplicity of the curved form and the selection of basic construction materials, all play part in generating an outstanding landmark building. + Project credits / dataProject: THE RING_around the field | Extension of the football stadium in Maribor (The title RING was the entry code of the winning competition back in 1998) Authors: OFIS arhitekti (http://www.ofis-a.si/) with Multiplan arhitekti (http://multiplan.si/) Competition: Rok Oman, Spela Videcnik, Ales Znidarsic, Katja Zlajpah, Bernard Podboj Sizes: Tribunes capacity: 12.500 seats Sub-programs: Underground: 4 gym-halls, dressing rooms, service Structure and materials: Base with public program: Concrete structure with expanded steele panels Dead lines: Competition entry: January 1998 Photographer: Tomaz Gregoric + All images and drawings courtesy OFIS Arhitekti | Photo by Tomaz Gregoric |
Backbone Village Houses | OFIS Arhitekti Posted: 22 Jan 2011 08:05 PM PST Slovenian architectural practice OFIS Arhitekti designed the contemporary yet affordable 3 bedroom housing development with private garden located in Podpec, Slovenia.
+ Project description by OFIS ArhitektiLjubljana is surrounded by numerous dense rural formations of different scales. Together by branching with the main urban core it forms the city. As the city is expanding outwards from the inner core, the urban and rural formations are slowly dissolving together. With uncontrolled urban growth historical rural typologies are slowly losing their patterns, character and qualities. The village of Podpec is becoming a typical suburban area. Although surrounded by a wider green area with fields and wild nature, local resorts haven't any qualities in the new built environment. This project is part of an urban study for suburban areas outside Ljubljanas highway ring. The main proposal was a condensation of village cores with branching – a traditional and historical rural layout of condensed longitudinal buildings along a road with kept green area around it. The internal road acts as a spinal cord with eight plots of longitudinal houses branching like ribs. These kind of plots with houses are a target for young families that can not afford to live in the centre and are looking for their own garden dissolving into the green surrounding. 3 bedroom houses with related garden and three external parking spaces were designed at 140-160.000 EUR each as an approximate budget that young couples can afford with a reasonable bank loan. Therefore, the basic concept had to be based on economical, rational and flexible issues. Each house has 2 floors, 55 m2 each. Each unit was finished at a stage without finished floors and sanitary elements in bathrooms. The ground-floor consists of a central living area and kitchen with storage. The living area has the possibility of an additional room such as a guest-bedroom or working space and also opens to an elevated veranda and small inner garden. The first floor functions as a sleeping area providing 3 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms and wardrobe space. There is a long terrace with a pergola along the bedrooms. The pitched roof design allows space for a gallery or storage area. Materials are larch wood, plaster and glass. + Project credits / dataProject: Backbone village houses Project start: 2006 House area: 110sqm (55 sqm / floor) + All images and drawings courtesy OFIS Arhitekti |
