Can a building ever be compared to Lady Gaga? Most experts may say no, but they obviously haven’t seen the New Museum, one of the best looking museums ever made according to Delaine Isaac.

The New Museum, founded as the New Museum of Contemporary Art by Marcia Tucker in 1977, is the only museum in New York City exclusively devoted to presenting contemporary art from around the world. On December 1, 2007, the New Museum opened its first freestanding, dedicated building at 235 Bowery.

The building, designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa/SANAA with Gensler, New York, serving as executive Architect, is expressed as a series of six asymmetrically stacked aluminum-clad rectilinear boxes shifted off-axis around a central steel core. Sejima + Nishizawa‘s inspiration came from the traditional set-backs exhibited by some of the city’s earlier skyscrapers.

The facade is shrouded in 3,270 square meters of expanded aluminum, originally developed in the United Kingdom as a means of reinforcing roads. It was the first time this medium has been employed in the United States. The basement of the New Museum features a 188-seat theater.

Manadaº Architecture Wins the Interior Innovation Award 2012

The young Mexican-German Architectural and Interior Design studio Manadaº has been awarded with the Interior Innovation Award 2012 by the German Design Council at the imm Cologne. Manadaº received this prestigious award for their design of the Bed 42, along with the Interior Innovation Award Winners 2012 Patricia Urquiola, Konstantin Grcic, and Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, among others.

The Bed 42 was in displayed at the imm Cologne fair, 16 – 22 January, 2012, and has already been booked for other exhibitions around Europe.

The Bed 42 is a materialization of multiple explorations by Manadaº. By mixing a bed and a desk in one product, they explore the flexibility of use of everyday objects; keeping always as a priority the aspiration to create quality products that are both sustainable – in an economical, social and environmental way – and timeless in their design.

"We do believe that what makes a design timeless is its constructive con-sciousness; " says Manadaº partner Alejandro Tapia. "The design approach has a lot to do with it becoming timeless," adds the architect and Manadaº partner, Katarina Alatzia. "Certified solid wood gives us that; it is a noble material that ages properly and is environmentally sustainable. That is part of a timeless design," finishes Alejandro.

The design of the Bed 42 reflects the creative DNA of the partners' nationalities, from one side the precision that characterizes German design, and on the other side the handcrafting skills of Mexican artisans. The bed has been manufactured in 4 weeks without any machine fabrication by using 2 inches certified solid walnut wood and local handcraft labor.

The young duo is one of the players in the up-coming young Mexican design scene, and the Interior Innovation Award 2012 is definitely a confirmation that they are on a right path in their search for sustainable and timeless design.

The imm cologne is the most important fair in the furniture market. Right from the beginning of every year the trade fair presents the new international furniture trends and surprises with numerous marketable innovations. SITE

Extreme

Extreme is the word that keeps coming back on the table at the time of the study. Extreme but necessary is the choice to implement life and activity in the region.

Extreme is the site, the climate, the drought, the light, the horizontal dimension of the territory. Extreme is also the way the place will be used: without schedule, without rules, without connection to the site, lost in the middle of the desert.

Extreme is the fact that once there, there is no alternative but to live in this very hotel. Extreme is also the time given to draw a project that embraces all the factors.

Facing the extreme.

This is the drive that leads us, from the desert, through civilizations, techniques and architectures to an idea. In this process, we quickly understood that for a form of life to develop, a certain number of conditions are essential, and the more favorable the conditions more the life form will evolve and civilize and head towards urbanity and culture.

How to transcribe these conditions in a site where for thousands of years the phenomenon hasn't been generated by itself? How to import urbanity in an area where nature overwhelms man?

Our hotel project rapidly became a small city project, a human settlement in which is combined habitat, commerce, education, politics, culture. A city inhabited, thanks to ESO by Man from different origins where ethnic and cultural diversity meets.

Amazing isn't it?

How to define a city but a gathering of individual, collective and public interconnected within a limit?

Our proposition has the ambition of unifying in a single gesture the conditions that will structure an ecosystem and allow human activity in a human hostile environment.

STRATEGY

To achieve the announced objective we set a strategy where each component of the project plays an essential role in the definition of the whole:

Rooms becomes roof, roof is a plaza, the plaza a window, the window a façade, the façade a landscape, etc…

The hotel is clearly defined and identified easily, alike a city; it can be apprehended, to become a landmark.

Simultaneously, each part presents its own identity, and shows its complementarity to the other.

The following diagrams show the genesis of the composition, a system of relationships:

1- THE SITE

2- ALTIMETRIC INTEGRATION SYSTEM: COMMON SPACE – ROOM

In order to limit the impact of the operation on the site, the room system takes place on the higher plateau, taking advantage of the different levels on the site, protects and defines therefore spaces located on the lower level.

3- PLAN LAYOUT PRINCIPLE – VISUAL INTEGRATION ON SITE

Orientation and views were the principle factor that guided the layout of the room. 49% of the rooms are oriented towards west, 24% towards east, 17% towards north and 10% towards south.

This layout generates two spaces "piazza" East and West that can be used at different time in the day depending on the sun.

4- THE ROOMS-INTERIOR-EXTERIOR PRIVATE AND COLLECTIVE

Around the piazzas, two principles define the project functionality.

System 1:
The rooms are built in and juxtaposed on the terrace, to define different kind of exterior spaces.
A private sunken and protected terrace is accessible from the room that opens up on a wide belvedere, a place of conviviality to meet and watch the sunset.

System 2:
The rooms form an elevated platform that offers the best views on the surroundings while increasing the head height of the subjacent spaces.

5- THE COMMON SPACES:

The layout and the organization of the upper part of the project define the common spaces.

System 1:
The restaurant etc…with its 5m high ceiling ending with an open roof slit, the space is visually connected with the West piazza and the horizon becomes the protagonist of its identity, the latter participates by its light and colors to the identity of the space.

The space will be used around the clock and should be able to accommodate simultaneously big gatherings, small groups and individuals.

Therefore, leveled spaces following the natural slope of the site generate more intimate spaces, small lounges and larger spaces.

System 2:
The swimming pool part etc. …with its 12m high ceiling is a kind of programmed winter garden, an interior Landscaped area that offers a very different microclimate from the exterior environment.

The desert is still present but not in a hostile way anymore, it is softened and promotes a friendly atmosphere. The zenithal light, changeable, allows different atmosphere.

6- RELATIONSHIP OF DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS:

CLIMATE

The climate of the Atacama Desert is very particular, and although it is experienced as extreme and inhospitable, the temperatures are not that extreme, at least, not at the altitude of the site at 2900m. It is not the dry bulb temperatures measured in normal conditions – in the shade and sheltered from the wind – that make the climate inhospitable, but rather other elements such as solar radiation and wind.

Here solar radiation is all the more important as it is paired with practically non cloud cover. As a result, people and buildings are exposed to a high degree of insolation and during the day, almost all the year round, and at night, a «negative radiation» or heat loss through the sky that increases when there is no cloud cover.

So if one is protected from the sun and the wind whilst enjoying the outside heat, we can experience one of the most enjoyable climates. Once we know how install protection and create openings, direct needs are relatively low.

This could be the principle theme of the project: to generate transitional spaces between outside and inside that reduce energy needs and offer a variety of different situations.

Insertion

The insertion of the project in the site is dictated primarily by the plot and the desire to limit excavation work, and to offer interesting views to all rooms and living areas.

The project appears to float above the contour lines and is orientated to the west, parallel to the slope with views towards the Salar of Atacama.

All rooms, whatever their orientation, have unobstructed and interesting views. The play of levels means that no room has a vis-à-vis effect (as indicated in the below diagram).

The climate is, as we have seen, in terms of dry temperature, relatively pleasant. The bioclimatic design is based on the solar protection and limiting heat loss at night.

Thus, the strategy is based on a structure of staggered floors offering sun protection and allows the creation of buffer zones that limit convection. These spaces are also an exterior extension of the dwelling. This morphology is backed against the ground to take advantage of its inertia.

The aim is to limit the buildings gross requirements in terms of heating, cooling and lighting. The effect is to smooth out the outside temperature curve while limiting the effects of wind and radiation.

To reduce thermal loss, all the walls are insulated. In subsequent design phases, studies will allow us to refine the performance of the insulation to avoid the risk of increasing needs for cooling by an overheating phenomenon.

The systems we anticipate incorporating at this stage of the project, combine performance and realistic goals and can be classified under four themes: environment, design, economics and technology.

The project's context – an isolated site in Chile and unconnected to the usual networks – orientates working towards a balance of the four themes.

The goal is to combine the highest environmental efficiency (energy, raw materials, transportation, etc…) with the less complex technology (low maintenance, easy implementation, etc..) and the lowest cost possible.

These three themes go towards of detailed and responsive design.

PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION

The strong directional design drives the initial decision to split the residence program in two distinctive horizontal sections: the upper zone dedicated to the guest's rooms and the below zone which address the common areas.

The main entrance to the residence is at the ground floor, at level -8.00 m, where all the reception services are gathered.

At this floor, the overall organization of the program divides the space in a wet area, where to find all the sport activities as well as the gardens, versus the dry zone, where to find the restaurants lounges and the multipurpose room. The two zone have been customized and accurately designed in order to fit the specificity of the building' s section: Where the water reflects the slot of light coming from the last level, the restaurant expands towards the above west plaza.

The entrance area is centered between the dining lounges to the north and the recreational rooms to the south. Split levels and double height sections animate the floor, which benefits of extraordinary panoramic exposure on three sides. As thematic sequence, the program has been structured in order to provide adequate alternation of more intimate and private domain, such as reading lounges, and more open and dynamic areas, i.e. buffet zone or game rooms.

The Residence's rooms define the content of the concrete box, and are distributed on three levels: the majority of the suites are allocated at level 2, with direct access and security-control entrances from and to the campus. This floor is internally connected to the lower common areas as well as to the other two floors of rooms. Each of the three floors offer to the guests unique rooms condition: within a rational and modular design in fact, the scheme achieves diversity of interiors through the multiplicity of hybrid spaces which surrounds the rooms. All the rooms benefit of exterior views as well as connections towards the east and west plaza, whose geometry generates semi-private terraces and more open collective zone where to socialize.

The efficient use of the floor plate creates intelligent distribution of rooms served by minimum circulation. Nevertheless surprising and pleasant moment of social gatherings are offered and evenly disposed along the rings. The strong relationship with the exterior and the special topographical plates that the design features provide many degrees of interactions between the users. Due to the scale and variety of lounge's sizes the common space at the rooms floors in fact range from small and intimate spaces to the extreme of the plaza's openness.

Vektor Wall Lamp \ SEMdesign

The new lamp by SEMdesign is called Vektor. This wall lamp got his name because of his powerful geometric shape.

Vektor can be hanged in all different directions, so you can hang the lamp either horizontal or vertical. Apart from in white, this lamp comes also in the strong primary colors red and blue. Although the same geometric shapes return into the lamp, due to the difference in color a totally different atmosphere can be created. Each color creates a different appearance and gives a different feel to a room.

Balcony Illusion Facade

Cinema presents us with choreographed narratives, perceptions of life, symbolism, realism, surrealism, a plethora of convictions. The facade should recognise and embrace this. The facade negates from the preciousness of the iconic as it de-realises our relationship with it.

A decorative motif refers to a decadent Imperial Russia, made from a polyester resin bas-relief material, is a modern twist on a historical motif represented in a minimal aesthetic. The form is representative of a suspension in time, what appears to be a static surface mimicking a fluid and ever changing landscape, inauthentic in it’s presence it’s abstracted sequence imposes a decadence through detail yet denying playfulness or making way for change which is why it is abstracted into a looser non hierarchical steel frame from which public balconies are suspended, this sequence introduces the unpredictable animating the facade. The cinema reflects change, altered perceptions and states of conditions be they existing or proposed, the screen separating the outside from the inside of the cinema.

The extruded steel lace frame is coated in a carbon fibre Silicium composite Corian cladding, which uses Photovoltaics to convert light into electrical voltage this triggers the steel ball bearing structural frame to change the angle of the striated blind facade, this shift creates a polarised effect, a dynamic/kinetic sculptural gesture which never appears twice in the same way, the blinds behave like mobiles when current is passed through the primary structure. Altering light levels and our perception of the facade gives the illusion of movement and a three dimensional space, an implied projected space.

The facade becomes inhabitable.

The balconies suspended from the steel lace frame are clad in SentryGlas, using holographic film they project an artifical light which can be controlled to alter the luminance mimicking stage set projections, the balconies act as a public gathering space whereby the individual experiences the transition from real to virtual, public to rpivate and interior to exterior, their non-hierarchical arrangement has no symmetry or order suggesting equality across the facade.

The intricate decorative casts appear are represented in a minimal aesthetic. The form is representative of a suspension in time, a very static surface mimicking a fluid and ever changing landscape, inauthentic in it’s presence through repetition, the tiled sequence imposes a very strict/rigid structure highlighting decadence through detail yet denying playfulness or making way for change. Had the tile sequence continually changed and altered throughout it’s section there would have been an introduction to the unpredictable, a n animation of that imposing structure. The cinema always reflects change, altered perceptions and states of conditions be they existing or suggestive/proposed, the screen separating the outside from the inside of the cinema needs to show this detailed yet completely unexpected frames, using the language/lexicon of Russian identity, yet dislocating them from their original meanings.

Cinema presents us with choreographed narratives, perceptions of life, symbolism, realism, surrealism, a plethora of convictions. The facade should recognise and embrace this. The facade acts as an iconic canvas, yet negates from the preciousness of the iconic as it de-realises/ the pattern.

The rich motif recalls rich floral decoration in royal spaces whilst representation is austere minimal contemporary materials like Corian are used.

The extruded lace elements are coated in solar cells which use Photovoltaics to convert light into electrical voltage which is stored in the Carbon fibre Silicium composite Corian clad external balcony frame, this triggers the transparency and curtain movement. reflect light in through the pod’s holographic glass sphere refracting it back out as a filtered source of sunlight with reduced harmful UVB radiation. This projected artificial light source can be controlled to alter its luminance mimicking film set light projections, the balconies act as a public gathering space whereby the individual experiences the transition from real to virtual, and interior to exterior.

The balconies are arranged in a non-hierarchy where there is no symmetry or order to their positions suggests an equality across the facade, The steel ball bearing frame moves shifting the Corian sections frame by frame and dislocating the striated double planes in turn animating the entire facade. The double plane blinds behave like mobiles which rotate slightly when a current is passed through the attached frame, the polarised effect alters light levels and our perception of the facade which gives the illusion of movement and a three dimensional space, an implied projected space. The facade becomes inhabitable.

Polyester resin bas-relief material is a modern twist on a very historical motif, the sectional changes offer a dialogue which reaches into the surrounding context and can be moved accordingly, further dislocating, addressing and informing our perceptions of the sequence of spaces, dialogue similar to the sequence of narrative frames in a reel.

Artistic heritage which does not fear undermining tradition, transgressing trend, politic or dogma by using motifs as references from which to evolve the nature of perception and narrative.
The illustration of the dynamic relationship which exists between the creation and the representation of film/art.
At the same time the facade will reveal the subtle relationship between works from different generations and cultural backgrounds, a rich tapestry of perceptions representations, story telling and the passion behind the exploration of abstraction and representation.

Fost er + Partners recently have completed Jameson House, it is the first mixed-use project in Canada.

Lord Foster said:

Vancouver has a spectacular location, surrounded by mountains and the sea. The design makes the most of the city's fantastic natural setting, with balconies and deep bay windows looking out towards the landscape. Jameson House further develops a number of key themes that have been integral to our work for many years. The project combines restoration with new construction; it is high-density and mixed-use, offering a sustainable model for urban living; and it demonstrates innovation, both in its evolution of the high-rise building and its progressive environmental agenda.

Jameson House is a new 35-storey mixed-use tower in the heart of Vancouver and includes the first residential development to be completed by the practice in North America – completed at the end of last year, already the building is now almost fully occupied. The project combines the restoration of heritage buildings with new construction: the lower level offices and shops knit with the existing streetscape to reinvigorate the downtown neighbourhood, while the apartments above face dramatic views of the bay and create a new landmark on the skyline.

Fusing old and new, the site connects the city's financial centre with its emerging creative hub, and the scheme integrates two 1920s Beaux Arts structures: the entire internal double-height volume of the A-listed Ceperley Rounsfell Building has been returned to its original configuration and the facade of the B-listed Royal Financial Building has been retained.

The development comprises eleven storeys of offices and shops, topped by twenty-three storeys of apartments. The tower's form articulates these different functions: the first two storeys continue the row of shop units at street level, while the uppermost office floor aligns with the cornice line of the adjacent building. Contrasting with the flush facade of the offices, the residential floors curve outwards in four wide bays, which are staggered to allow daylight to reach neighbouring buildings and oriented to provide uninterrupted views of the landscape.

The tower's flexible plan supports a variety of apartment types, with interiors by Foster + Partners and living spaces in the deep curve of the window bays. At the top of the tower are two-storey penthouse apartments and landscaped roof terraces.
The design was developed in response to the local climate, seasonal sun paths, prevailing winds, humidity levels, air temperatures and precipitation rates specific to Vancouver. Foster + Partners' in-house engineering group – formerly PHA Consult – has been involved in the project from the outset, in a fully integrated approach to environmental engineering and architectural design. This has led to innovations such as chilled floors and a mechanised valet parking system, which reduces the number of parking levels and associated excavation, lighting and ventilation requirements.

This stunning piece of modern architecture takes on a space age look, with huge windows that follow the curve of the walls, giving the building a thin picture frame edge.

A large sun deck protrudes forward like the bow of a ship, making you feel as though you are on a holiday cruise.

This contemporary music room looks out of dual aspect curved windows, upon an abundance of nature; simply breathtaking.

A colorful modern living space scattered with fun elements and splashes of vibrant color.

A large white office space is given a warm homely feel with a deep shag pile carpet underfoot.

AQSO arquitectos office has designed the high density residential complex in Guangyuan, China.

The project is conceived as a strong element in consonance with the surrounding hilly scene. The buildings rise over the landscape becoming a milestone, a sober and expressive landmark solving the program requirements: archive the desired plot ratio and increase the green area by minimizing the building footprint.

The Southern side of the plot has a strong residential character, blocks orientated North-South within a park where the public facilities are located. On the other hand the Northern side is conceived as an urban atmosphere where four main towers are located on top of a commercial podium, establishing a mutual relation with the rest of the city.

The overall building façade combines a domestic and sober feeling. The residential blocks highlight the horizontal disposition of the floor slabs, between which is located a permeable skin made of sliding louvers. The vertical and monolithic presence of the towers is reinforced by an irregular wood and stone cladding.

In contrast to the rational layout of the blocks, the green areas are treated with a flexible and organic circulation. Several roads of different character outspreading from the center connect the different entrance points emphasizing the elastic layout of the landscape. The spaces in between are designed with diverse types of vegetation depending on its use.

In order to optimize the ventilation and natural illumination of the units, the block width has been fixed to 12.5m, establishing a comprehensive structural system for the buildings and the parking located in the basement.

The user-experience consultancy firm Netlife Research commissioned Eriksen Skajaa Architects to rethink their offices and create new spaces for reflection and creativity.

The challenge of low headroom and deep, dark office spaces inspired the architects to choose lightness as the basis for their concepts. These included white, natural rubber floors and a white ceiling as well as large glass walls and "Light boxes" to divide the different meeting rooms. The meeting rooms hover between the ceiling and the floor, while the black hall offers depth and solidity.

As a second concept the client was given four different "gardens" to enhance their creative working methods: The monastery garden, the park, the kitchen garden and the forest clearing; different places to relax and reflect.

L.A. DESIGN GROUP SHOWS ITS "WILD" SIDE WITH SNAIL PAVILION
COMPETITION ENTRY FOR THE CERAMIC TILES OF ITALY TRADE SHOW PAVILION

Snail Pavilion is a competition entry for the Ceramic Tiles of Italy trade show pavilion. The purpose of the pavilion is for the trade association to represent its member companies' products at a series of shows over a three-year term. Instead of selecting just a few sample products to feature, the scheme uses hundreds of tiles from Ceramic Tiles of Italy member companies to create giant "creatures" that bristle with the range and depth of Italian ceramic products. In this way the pavilion is more like a library with tiles stacked on shelves than it is a surface against which tiles are set in a rigid grout bed. Visitors can literally occupy the entire history and product catalog of the member companies. An innovative stacking system uses a simple assembly method to produce the appearance of feathers or scales – arraying tiles in a variety of sizes and colors into complex, visual seductive plumage, bristles, and whorls. The tiles are organized into loose color groupings that anticipate different sizes and tones, so the system can accommodate a broad diversity of sample products.

The creatures organize the pavilion into a diagonal shortcut path that funnels visitors to a pinch point where the tiles stick out and invite tactile exploration. Open figures in plan make the creatures occupiable for food service staging and VIP dining. To encourage the sense of adventure while patrons browse the pavilion, unfolded maps of each creature will be provided to point out the locations of tiles that member companies would like to feature. Browsing floor coverings becomes a safari!

Paris-based Japanese architects ARCHIEE recently has completed the renovation project for a boutique, located in Paris, that displays and sells traditional Japanese products.

Bellow are the details of the concept:

• Simple grid
The project is based on a simple grid of Phillips screws that form the system for displaying the merchandise. There are a total of 377 screws, each having been individually screwed by hand in its allocated point. Each screw is accompanied by a simple clip, which allows the merchandise to be hung to the wall.

• Flexibility of the layout
The grid enables the boutique great flexibility with regard to the display of the merchandise. Depending on the scale of the object to be displayed, a single screw or a cluster of screws can be utilized. The products are to be displayed in specific, yet fluid, categories in order to convey a narrative to the customer.

• Composition of the space
In order to fulfill the grid, the project comprises of expansive and continuous wall surfaces. There are twodiscernible surfaces. The first surface is a smooth undulating surface that, being placed over the strange existing shape of the boutique, plays two fundamental roles, that of creating a minimal internal surface and that of directing the customer around the space. The second surface is a planar intervention that covers an existing concrete column and a steel column which are awkwardly close to each other. This makes use of what would otherwise be wasted space and also simplifies and facilitates the circulation around the boutique. To maximize space further, the cash register for the boutique is found within this planar intervention.

• Facade
The façade of the boutique has been kept as minimal as possible in order to create a dialogue between the interior and exterior space. As such, the facade becomes the initial boundary of the continuous undulating surface.

• Merchandise control
In order to identify the merchandise on display, each screw has a unique identification number printed next to it. This allows the boutique to keep track of the display, stocking, and selling of each item of merchandise. This identification number is purposefully kept visible on the wall as delicate decoration.

“Open Tap Project“, is the opensource laboratory for the development of sustainable furniture, designed by DOSUNO Design. They have created the MT 01 table model, ET 01 shelf model & ST 03 chair model for the “Open Tap Project”.

We are aware that what we have in our hands is but a seed, an idea. An idea which we have had the opportunity to validate through theory and empiricism.

The MT 01 table model is assembled without screws or adhesives due the angled cuts in the surface put together with the legs placed at 45 degrees. The structure of the table also gives a very definite aesthetic identity that adds aesthetic value to the proposal. The solution of the 45 degree fitting at the bottom allows for an easy conversion of height that allows the alternative to go from a coffee table to dining table.

The ET 01 shelf model is easily scalable in all directions for an easy adaptation to multiple needs and to any space due to its symmetrical design and construction method. The perforations in the pipes allow the relocation of the shelves themselves. Since the system is kept up by weight and friction while leaning against a wall it requires no complex or permanent installation allowing relocating the furniture with ease.

The ST 03 chair model is based on a popular weaving technique widely used in most regions of our country. It requires no technical skills or specialized tools. This solution also generates a multitude of customization options (due to the existence of an ample color catalog in the woven materials) that would suit the personal tastes of users. This aspect of customization creates a great advantage for the user since they can adapt the furniture to their personal taste and transform it easily.

These clean renders by Rafael Reis show minimalist designs where the contents of the home blend with the surroundings, with palettes of pale neutrals only giving way to a few select accessories. The CGI layouts show wide open plan spaces that are bathed in light by huge floor to ceiling windows, with views of the city beyond.

The furniture is kept simple and functional, and a series of concrete block walls brings a utilitarian feel to the space.

A leather recliner chair paired with footstool creates a zone in which relax with a choice from the vast book collection from the bank of extensive floating shelves.

The casually arranged personal items prevent the place from appearing over staged and instead creates a pleasant lived in look, whilst the glow from the concealed strip lighting gives the large space a feeling of warmth.

Glossy finishes add to the contemporary luxury in this sophisticated room.

Islands of comfort are created with huge rugs.

A monochrome look gives this kitchen strong lines, so the dining area and over table lighting have been kept simple to prevent the two areas from clashing.

Gonçalo Campos has recently created the XI bookshelf. A bookshelf designed to be very simple to assemble, without the use of any screws or fixtures. Its assembly becomes very simple due to the very carefully placed fittings that allow for the parts to lock together, like a wooden puzzle.

The carving of the assembly instructions directly on the boards is what makes this construction so simple. It shows the most technical part of the object, and is present throughout the shelf’s use, reminding you of that one event. It also allows for taking apart and rebuilding it anytime, since the instructions wont get lost.

Despite it’s dynamic look, this shelf is very sturdy, because of it’s X structure and the suspended vertical support, that holds the loose ends of the horizontal parts.

This shelf was designed to be produced by CNC milling. This makes it very simple and fast to produce.

The MINO garden gnome takes care for your plants.

The garden dwarf tradition is older than what is commonly believed. Originating in XVII century Germany, garden dwarfs were exported by an English nobleman to decorate his garden, and they have now become the globally widespread kitsch ornaments that we all know. Despite its jazzy colours, the modern dwarf is a melancholic figure, condemned to a purely decorative function within a domesticated and artificial environment. Mino on the other hand lives in a garden full of life, destined to survive for one season only to then die with pride by feeding the surrounding vegetation.

LAVA’s school relocatable is a learning space for the future. The classroom for 21st century learning is sustainable, integrates with the landscape, connects with the school environment, and is suitable for prefabrication and mass customisation.

Relocatables are the decades old solution to changing demographics, remote community needs, and natural disasters. Unsightly, they are perceived as cheap and unpleasant spaces.

This idea is upturned with spaces that are sustainable, practical, costeffective whilst making learning fun and exciting.

Sustainable design includes prefabrication, eco-materials, symmetrical repeatable geometry, and small lightweight easily transportable modular elements. The modular façade system is manually operable, flexible for light and shade, enclosed space or open space, bringing the outside in or the inside out. Mass customisation is low cost, low carbon, with off-site prefabrication allowing responsive assembly, and adapts to varied climates, unusual configurations and topographies.

The 'three axis' geometry design allows interlocking of various configurations to adapt to changing class sizes, learning clusters and future learning methods.

This cellular space for learning strengthens the connection between mankind, nature and technology.

The design received a 'Jury Special Mention' in the Australian Future Proofing School competition and was on show in December 2011 at the Wunderlich Gallery, University of Melbourne.

LAVA (Laboratory for Visionary Architecture) was founded in 2007. The directors, Chris Bosse, Tobias Wallisser and Alexander Rieck, have designed projects such as the city centre plan for the CO²-neutral Masdar City, the Michael Schumacher Tower in Abu Dhabi, Future-Hotel-Prototype in Duisburg and a new university master plan in Saudi Arabia.

Chris Bosse, whilst associate architect at PTW Architects, was a key designer of the Watercube at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Tobias Wallisser is Professor for Innovative Construction and Spatial Concepts at the State Academy of Fine Arts, Stuttgart. As an associate architect at UNStudio, Amsterdam, he was responsible for the planning of the Stuttgart Mercedes-Benz Museum. Both of these projects set new standards in the field of computer-based drafting. Alexander Rieck has been working for the Fraunhofer Institute in Stuttgart for over ten years and coordinates a range of inter-institutional architectural activities, including the research project Future of Construction.

With the rapid pace of information across the globe new opportunities are emerging for making connections between local, regional and global contexts.

The classroom of the future uses this current technology revolution to position a space for learning at the nexus between knowledge and social interaction. The design anticipates the future by allowing classes to be subdivided in flexible clusters, which can continuously change. The teacher, rather than being watched like a black box theatre performance, is in the centre of these clusters and moves around them. The system acts as an adaptable system instead of a fixed hierarchy.

Sustainable Integration – Broad spectrum
Sustainable design extends beyond performance related solutions to the proposed method of prefabrication, selection of materials, symmetrical repeatable geometry, and small modular elements that are lightweight (able to be manually handled) and easily transportable on small readily available vehicles. The modular façade system, designed for each location, is manually operable and gives greatest flexibility for light and shade, enclosed space or open space, bringing the outside in or the inside out.

Discovering the Future – a building that learns
Naturally informed geometry of the module provides a framework for present and future classroom configurations. Lightweight fabric separates a central space; this allows the classroom module to adapt to one large or three smaller spaces for learning – all connect to landscape or compatible contexts. Small and large class sizes are accommodated by the classrooms basic 'three-axis' geometry that allows the interlocking of each module to form large groups with smaller learning clusters. This results in the building itself learning how to adapt to future methods or learning and future modes of operation. The building at the same time educates the students about sustainability, social interaction, nature and technology.

Mass Customisation – low cost, low carbon
Prefabrication will:

Allow all building components to be prefabricated off site as complete elements.
Floor and roof elements to be "sandwich panels", designed to be easily manoeuvrable and connectable.
Allow elements to be connected on site using simple connections, e.g. bolts or screws for structure.
Minimise material waste, number of elements and construction time allow for stockpiling of classrooms for deployment at short notice to replace school facilities damaged by natural disasters.

A Future of Learning
Knowledge is a global resource that is shared through technology – a rapidly evolving entity. The future of learning will be through technology that is accommodated in a space that supports both human interaction and virtual discovery, a space that enhances opportunities for learning and allows remote locations to participate in the future of learning. This allows the future classroom to adapt to multiple sites, unusual configurations and topographies. A simple prefabrication telescopic system of posts supports the main structure and allows flat and sloping terrains to be accommodated; integrating the classroom in to the landscape. This adjustable system allows rapid installation and relocation when required. This cellular space for learning embraces a future that strengthens the connection between mankind, nature and technology.

ALLIED WORKS DESIGNS NEWLY OPENED CLYFFORD STILL MUSEUM IN DENVER, COLORADO

New York City – Following an invited international competition in 2006, Allied Works was selected to design the Clyfford Still Museum, a single-artist institution devoted to the life and work of the 20th-century painter. Opened to the public on November 18th, the museum houses 94 percent of Still's total creative output, spanning nearly six decades of work. It is one of the most comprehensive single-artist collections in the world.

Allied Works' design provides visitors with an intimate environment to experience the art of Clyfford Still. The building is a dense, cantilevered two-story building of richly worked concrete. Featuring nine light-filled galleries on its second level, as well as a library, educational and archival resources, a conservation studio, and collection storage on its first floor, the 28,500-square-foot museum creates a compelling environment in which to view and appreciate Still's work and learn about his life and impact.

This new building for the work of the artist Clyfford Still provides an intensely intimate and introspective relationship with his art. The building is conceived as a nearly geologic experience, one that firmly holds both visitor and art in spaces amplified by natural light. The sequence from city, to park, to building creates a ceremony of repose that prepares the visitor for a personal and very physical relationship with this incredibly important body of drawings and paintings— whose power and presence are revealed in natural light for the first time.

In spring 2012, Allied Works, in collaboration with Berlin-based publisher Hatje Cantz, will release a new book that presents the vision and realization of the museum from initial concepts to completion.

BUILDING DESIGN

One first encounters the museum through a grove of trees and landscaped forecourt, which provides a place of contemplation, decompression, and transition from the museum's surrounding urban context. Through the trees, the structure of the building is visible, consisting of cast-in-place architectural concrete walls with a variety of surface relief and texture. The façade features thin, vertical lines of concrete that project from the building's surface in a fractured, organic, and random pattern, creating a rich surface that changes in the intense Denver sunlight and forms varied shadows across the building.

The entry is revealed beneath a canopy of trees, and visitors are welcomed into the museum by a low, long reception lobby. Visitors rise from the lobby and reception area toward the natural light falling from the galleries on the second floor. The museum's second level features nine light-filled galleries, totaling approximately 10,000 square feet. Each gallery is distinctly defined and proportioned to respond to specific aspects and needs of the collection and helps trace the different phases of Still's career in chronological sequence. Gallery heights vary to accommodate changes in scale and media; those with 17-foot, 6-inch-high ceilings showcase Still's monumental Abstract Expressionist canvases, some of which extend to over 12 feet tall and 16 feet long, while smaller galleries with 12-foot ceilings create a more intimate viewing environment for the presentation of smaller-scale paintings and works on paper. Two outdoor terraces and an education gallery offer visitors a moment of reflection and investigation during the gallery sequence, and allow them to re-orient themselves with the surrounding and distant landscape. Moving between galleries, visitors are provided glimpses down into the collection storage and interpretive galleries on the first level.

The visitor's experience of the collection is enlivened by natural light that enters the galleries through a series of skylights over a cast-in-place, perforated concrete ceiling. The geometry of openings in the ceiling creates an even field of soft and changing daylight in the galleries. Diffusing glass, motorized shades, and electric light give curatorial flexibility to the gallery spaces, helping to support different gallery configurations and the museum's rotating exhibition program.

Upon completing the primary gallery sequence, visitors may descend back to the museum's first level to explore the painting storage, archive, and exhibition spaces viewable from above. An open double-high corridor connects these facilities and serves as an exhibition hall allowing visitors to further their learning of the history and life of Clyfford Still. A "timeline" section of the corridor places the artist's work in context with historic events and other artistic movements, and an "archive" hallway presents the everyday artifacts of the artist's life and information about his painting technique and media. From this corridor, visitors are also able to view the collection storage rooms, and assess the number of paintings produced during the artist's prolific career. A visible conservation lab and a research center offer visitors additional resources for furthering their knowledge of Still's career. This open corridor speaks to the institution's founding principle of unveiling this once-private and very personal collection to the public, as it invites a gradual immersion in the works of Still.

Allied Works is an interdisciplinary architecture and design practice that operates from offices in New York City and Portland, Oregon. Founded by Brad Cloepfil in 1994, the practice has been defined by a deep concern for the landscape, human experience and craft, as well as the preservation and enhancement of the public realm.

Currently, Allied Works is working on a variety of projects at multiple scales. The Clyfford Still Museum was founded to promote public and scholarly understanding of the late artist's work and legacy, through the presentation and preservation of the Clyfford Still and Patricia Still estates, donated to the City of Denver in 2004 and 2005 respectively, and totaling approximately 2,400 artworks. Considered one of the most important painters of the twentieth century, Still (1904 – 1980) was among the first generation of Abstract Expressionist artists who developed a new, powerful approach to painting in the years immediately following World War II. The Stills' estates—now understood to contain 94 percent of the artist's total output—as well as his extensive archive, have been sealed off from the public since 1980. South Korean design studio dialoguemethod has created the “H-Supplies Kit”.

“H-supplies kit” is started out the trouble for South Korea’s traditional paper Hanji’s new using beyond paper. Hanji paper has excellent lightweight and natural patterns compared to other papers.

Hanji (1mm) and birch plywood (4mm) were repeatedly stacked. so, the product has lighter weight and durability, birch plywood has color stripe pattern on the cross section.

“H-supplies kit” is consist of six different types of modular office equipment items.(tape holder, pen holder, business card holder, cable holder, notes, deposit)

The same production process can be applied to a wide range as well as office supplies and furniture accessories, lighting.
